1 in 3 Brits would end a relationship over bad habits and minor annoyances
Europcar survey finds 28% would rather be single than be with an imperfect partner; 14% are more particular about their car than their partner
In a world of endless options, new research commissioned by Europcar to mark the launch of its Model Choice service, reveals that Brits are becoming increasingly discerning when it comes to relationships. Over a third (34%) admit to ending a romance over seemingly trivial annoyances. And 28% said they’d rather remain single than settle for someone they deem less than perfect.
Europcar’s Model Choice service means motorists can book the exact model they want to drive from a range of premium vehicles, including executive saloons, spacious SUVs, and high-performance cars. And it seems that many people would like to have the same ability when it comes to their life partner.

Loud chewing, tardiness, bad table manners and breathing too loudly were the most common irritants that have led to the demise of a previous relationship, according to the Europcar research. And a significant 31% wouldn’t offer a second chance even if their partner promised to change.
Tom Read-Wilson, star of Celebs Go Dating and a self-confessed perfectionist said: “Dating these days is like trying to find the perfect car. We know what we want and we’re not willing to settle for anything less. We all have our deal-breakers, whether it’s bad hygiene or someone still texting with their ex. Europcar’s data shows that when it comes to choosing a partner, we weigh up options carefully, just like when choosing a car. It’s all about either finding that perfect match or staying single and enjoying the ride!”
“This new research reveals a fascinating insight into modern relationship dynamics,” commented Sarah Clarke, Consumer Marketing Manager, Europcar. “It’s clear that people don’t want to compromise on even the smallest of issues, reflecting a broader trend of heightened selectivity in today’s society. Indeed 37% said they believe people are more selective now than they used to be because of the prevalence of dating apps and social media.
“We also found that exacting standards extend beyond romantic relationships. 14% of respondents admitted they are more selective about their choice of car than their partner. And when choosing a vehicle, reliability (28%), comfort (14%), and performance (7%) were identified as top priorities. With the Europcar Model Choice service, drivers can be as discerning as they want and know that they will get the car they booked.
“At Europcar, we understand the importance of providing reliable and comfortable mobility solutions that meet our customers’ high standards and are committed to offering an ever-growing range of vehicles to suit every driver’s individual needs and expectations.”
