The iconic Punks Peak sprint race returns to Mont Jaizkibel on Wednesday 11th June, with Royal Enfield entering the newly released SAMURAI, a Compact Performance Chopper built by Sureshot’s Takuya Aikawa, based on a 648cc air-oil-cooled, 4-stroke, parallel twin-cylinder SOHC engine, the displacement has been increased to 865cc using an S&S Big Bore kit and a host of performance modifications – the machine will become the headline feature from Thursday evening at the ArtRide Exhibition, Skatepark Biarritz, where it will be the focus of a unique artwork by renowned artists and brothers, ‘Pistache’, who will also be designing and printing a selection of unique t-shirts for visitors to commemorate the Wheels & Waves event.

The Black Rose is one of 18 Baturs being built by Mulliner’s Bespoke Studio, and results from an extensive co-creation journey between the client and Mulliner’s design team. This exquisite car features bespoke ‘Black Rose’ metallic paintwork commissioned by Mulliner exclusively for the customer, with a gloss Beluga upper body. Ben Coombs’ ‘Mini6000’ trip saw him drive the self-prepared classic Mini out of a shipping container in Montevideo in Uruguay passing first through the Argentinian central plains to reach Ojos del Salado, the world’s tallest volcano in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Despite having previously travelled the length of the Americas in a TVR Chimera and crossing Africa in a Porsche 944, ‘Mini6000’ was arguably his most challenging adventure to date.

As well as experiencing temperatures plummeting to -20˚C, searing sandblasting winds, whilst lugging 200kg of extra kit in and on his 600kg Mini – including what turned out to be a superfluous lot of three spare FK07 tyres, Ben and his supercharged Mini faced the unpredictable and life-threatening consequences of climbing to 6000m.

Even at half this altitude, both Mini and driver were contending with 25 per cent less air to breathe. In full knowledge of the perils he would face and wishing to ensure he was going into this harsh environment as best prepared as possible, Ben didn’t want to compromise on tyres. “I wanted to use a respected brand of tyre and opted for Falken,” says Ben. “Perhaps surprisingly, we didn’t want an aggressive tread pattern sensing they would dig in so opted for sand crawler boards or winching when the sand and ash got deeper.”

As tyre sizes creep ever bigger, Falken continues to support classic car owners by offering smaller pattern sizes including a wider range of 12” and 13” tyres more commonly found on ‘modern classics’. Each is designed to deliver excellent wear and grip, whether it’s a trip to a local club meet in the park or summiting a volcano.

With some of the newer rocks encountered on the steep slopes of Ojos del Salado just 30,000 years old and the last lava flows said to have been around 11-12,000 years ago, Ben was impressed with how the Falken’s resilient sidewalls coped with the younger and sharper rocks. “At times we ran lower tyre pressures to gain traction, yet we never had a single puncture. Whatever the surface and even on the rougher, rutted tracks, the tyres were the one thing we never worried about,” adds Ben.

Despite daily maintenance to contend with the altitude strangling the Mini’s engine of air, including regularly increasing the carburettor jet’s size in line with the increasing altitude, it was a struggle to get enough fuel through to start the A-Series lump and keep it running.

With both the support Range Rover and Mini now at an altitude higher than any other road in the world, just 100m shy of the 6,000m target, the carburettor’s float finally stuck, preventing the engine from firing. Tantalisingly close, Ben headed down through the boulder field, getting the car to level ground where it finally burst into life and could start the no-less challenging descent and onward 1,500-mile return journey, via Patagonia, all still whilst relying on the original Falken rubber.

With the Mini and its still-fresh spare tyres now safely back in the UK, Ben is already plotting his next adventure and is set to rely on Falken tyres once again for whatever comes next. “I’d definitely consider Falken for our next Mini Adventure,” concludes Ben.

Adding modifications can detract from the potential purchase price, with most buyers preferring unmodified cars. Cosmetic changes can often negatively impact value, with poorly executed paint jobs, body kits, or decals significantly reducing a car’s appeal and value. 

Engine and performance modifications can be particularly problematic. Extreme engine modifications, such as ECU remaps or larger turbos to increase the bhp output, can raise concerns about potential reliability issues and even maintenance costs. Similarly, unauthorised or non-original aftermarket parts can reduce the vehicle’s value due to potential risks and warranty issues.

The effect of modifications on a car’s overall value depends on numerous factors such as the quality of the work, reversibility of alterations and legality – as unapproved or illegal modifications decrease value and can make the car unroadworthy and uninsurable. The overall market appeal is also significantly reduced as some modifications may appeal to niche buyers but limit the overall market for the vehicle.”

Certain procedures must be followed when modifying any car to avoid devaluing or hindering its market appeal. Always retain original parts to potentially reverse modifications before selling; focus on enhancements that improve vehicle performance rather than purely cosmetic customisations; ensure modifications are installed by professionals who use quality parts from reputable brands; and consider the long-term impact on insurance and vehicle integrity.

Thursday 7 November, 2024 The used car market grew by 4.3% between July and September, marking the seventh successive quarter of year on year growth, according to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).¹ Some 1,965,811 vehicles changed hands, with 81,651 additional transactions compared with the same period in 2023,² following growth in the new car market.

In further good news, a record 53,423 used battery electric vehicles (BEVs) found new owners, a jump of 57.0%, reflecting the largest-ever market share at 2.7%, up from 1.8% in the same period last year. Sales of plug-in hybrids and hybrids also rose, up 29.0% and 35.8% respectively. Meanwhile, 1,123,387 petrol (up 5.7%) and 679,797 diesel vehicles (down -3.9%) found new owners, together accounting for 91.7% of the market.

Superminis retained their long-standing popularity, with sales increasing by 5.0% to 637,865 units to make up 32.4% of all transactions. Lower medium (up 5.5%) and dual purpose (up 10.5%) cars came second and third, accounting respectively for 27.1% and 15.8% of the market. Combined, the top three represented more than three quarters (75.3%) of all used cars changing hands. Meanwhile, the upper medium, executive, MPV, mini and luxury saloon segments recorded falls.

Black remained the best-selling used car colour, accounting for 21.2% of all transactions. Unchanged from the same period last year, grey took second place, growing by 7.9% to 17.6% of sales, followed by blue, up by 2.8% and making up 16.1% of the market. Silver was the only colour in the top 10 to see volumes fall, slipping to fifth place.

From January to September, transactions have risen in every month and with just one quarter to go until the year end, the used car market is up 6.0% on the same period in 2023, with almost six million (5,897,129) units sold in the first nine months.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Growth in the used car sector is good news and driven by an outstanding range of desirable and, increasingly, zero emission vehicles to suit every budget. Maintaining this depends on a healthy new car market, particularly for EVs. Giving consumers the confidence to switch from their familiar petrol or diesel vehicles requires confidence and incentives otherwise many would-be new car buyers will sit on their hands, leading to a diminishing market that will inevitably limit used car availability and affordability. This will be to the cost of motorists, the economy and the environment – making a review of support for the transition and the regulation intended to deliver it, an urgent priority.”

Experts at automotive data company HPI have picked ten used models which, at under £11K, offer great value for money motoring. 

The study, which looked at SUV and 4X4 values over the past 12 months at three years 60,000 miles, identified the Dacia Duster 1.5 Blue dCi Comfort 5dr 4X4 as the best-value used 4X4 currently on the market, with a price of £9,925.

The Suzuki Ignis 1.2 Dualjet 12V Hybrid SZ5 ALLGRIP 5dr is next on the list with a price of £10,250, followed by the Dacia Duster 1.3 TCe 150 Prestige 5dr 4X4 valued at £10,550.

Offering next best value at under £11K is the Subaru XV 1.6i SE 5dr Lineartronic at £10,850. The fifth best value for money 4×4 under £11K is the Ssangyong Korando 1.6 D Pioneer 4×4 5dr Auto valued at £10,950. 

The study also identified the five models offering the best value for money by year-on-year percentage reduction in price (highest percentage deflation at 36 months/60K miles in each range).

Top of the list is the Audi E-Tron Sportback 300kW 55 Quattro 95kWh S Line 5dr Auto, the only full EV model on both lists which has seen a 24.9% reduction in price in the past 12 months. Next is the Ssangyong Korando diesel 1.6 D Pioneer 4×4 5dr Auto, dropping 22.3% over the past 12 months, followed by the hybrid model Land Rover Range Rover Velar 2.0 P400e S 5dr Auto, falling 22.2%. The Maserati Levante Hybrid GT 5dr Auto declines 21.9%, just ahead of the Subaru XV 1.6i SE Premium 5dr Lineartronic with a 21.8% year-on-year reduction.

The only models to appear on both lists are the Ssangyong Korando and Subaru XV.

Commenting on the data, Chris Plumb, senior valuations editor at HPI, said: “The SUV market, in particular, remains one of the fastest growing and most exciting vehicle sectors, with manufacturers continuing to put a great deal of emphasis on design, styling and performance to capitalise on this continuous growth. 

“There are some great value deals to be had at present with a good choice of used 3-year-old models coming in at under £11K and the Dacia Duster at under £10K, satisfying the strong consumer appetite for practical and stylish yet great value motoring.”

Sold as two separate lots, these delightful Esso figurines stand at 1.2 metres tall and are offered in great condition. The popular Oil Drop Man character, named Happy, was launched as a promotional character for Esso in the United States in 1958, and he was often accompanied by the slogan Happy Motoring. Used throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he was often depicted with Oil Drop Woman, making these figurines a wonderfully collectible pair.

Lot 279 | Atlantic Motor Spirit Petrol Pump
A stunning piece of petroliana, this beautiful Atlantic Petrol and Union Motor Spirit dual-cylinder, hand-crank petrol pump, designed by Gilbert & Barker, has been fully restored and is ready to be enjoyed. Charles Gilbert and John Barker formed the Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts in 1870 and, in 1911, introduced first measuring gasoline pump. The beautifully designed, and carefully restored, pump represents a stylish and glamourous automotive age and makes for a stunningly decorative display piece.
