EMED has enhanced its fleet with over 250 Renault Master vans after being awarded two new patient transport contracts in Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Frimley

Converted Renault LCVs are used to transfer outpatients who cannot otherwise attend vital appointments

Order sees Renault vehicles account for 48% of the EMED fleet, which currently stands at more than 1,300 vans and cars

Renault LCVs chosen over those from several other brands, EMED’s decision being influenced by the durability, value and reliability of its existing Renault vehicles

EMED plans to grow its amount of Renault vehicles further still, the business expecting to add the new Master later in 2025

The UK’s leading provider of patient transport services has once again turned to Renault after launching new patient transport services across Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Frimley.

EMED, which was formed in 2023, has grown its fleet with the addition of over 250 specially converted Renault Master vans. The new LCVs are being used to fulfil two brand new contracts that see its highly-trained personnel provide mobility services to outpatients across these regions that are otherwise unable to attend vital hospital appointments.

The 10-year contracts are a significant expansion for the business, with the new vans ensuring that Renault vehicles now account for 48% of EMED’s 1,346-vehicle fleet.

EMED considered vans from several brands over an 18-month tender period. However, its positive experience of its existing Renault vehicles drove its decision to invest in more, with reliability, durability, economy and the competitive price being key decision drivers. Notably, the weight of the base Master van allowed EMED to keep the fully-converted unit below 3.5 tonnes – an essential requirement that allows a wide array of staff to drive and keep each van in use 10 hours a day.

To optimise value for the business and the NHS, the company intends to keep each of its new Master vans for seven years, with the possibility that this may be extended to 10 years. EMED expects each van to cover circa 180,000 miles during the period.

Most vans have been converted to non-emergency patient transport services (NEPTS) specification, while five have been completed as high dependency unit (HDU) vehicles. Those in NEPTS trim transport patients that include those who have dementia or are required to attend essential dialysis and oncology appointments, while the HDU vehicles carry critical patients between places of treatment. All are equipped with wheelchairs and oxygen, with circa 50% also including stretchers.

Jimmy Sommerville, Group Fleet Manager at EMED, said: “There are cheaper units, but you get what you pay for, and the Renault is a quality product while still offering a competitive cost. It is more important that we have something which lasts, and our experience of our previous Renault LCVs has been very positive, with good reliability and no downtime. The crews also like them, and later this year we will be looking to further extend the fleet with the addition of the new Master.”

Justin Costello, Head of Fleet, Renault UK, commented: “It is very rewarding that Renault is enabling EMED to grow exponentially while helping some of the most vulnerable in our communities to reach essential hospital appointments comfortably and safely. The fact that EMED will keep its Masters for up to a decade illustrates just how durable and dependable Renault vehicles are.”

Additional £400 for customers of Clio E-Tech hybrid, Captur E-Tech hybrid and Symbioz E-Tech hybrid models

Extra £1,000 for customers of Arkana, Austral, and Rafale E-Tech hybrid (including PHEV), plus Megane and Scenic E-Tech electric models

Rafale E-Tech PHEV now benefits from lower 2.9% APR representative PCP finance, the new flagship model now also coming with a total deposit contribution of £5,000 during the event

Renault is making switching to an electrified car more accessible than many drivers may think thanks to its limited time Award-winning E-Tech Event, which takes place at the brand’s nationwide retailers until 3rd March.

During the promotion, which comes just in time for anyone considering a new 25-plate car, the Award-winning E-Tech Event sees customers benefit from up to £1,000 on top of selected Renault E-Tech electric, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid retail car offers.

The event builds on the success and popularity of the French manufacturer’s ever-growing electrified E-Tech line-up. Against 2023, its UK sales of pure-electric vehicles were up 77% and those of hybrids grew by 29%.

Models featured in the limited-time promotion have been haloed by the motoring press, with several contributing to Renault averaging over one industry award a week in 2024.

Whether customers are making the jump to a full electric car or are making the transition via a hybrid, the Award-winning E-Tech Event has a car for them.

During the event, deposit contributions for Clio, Captur and Symbioz E-Tech hybrid models increase by £400 on top of existing PCP finance offer contributions (of up to £2,400 for Clio E-Tech hybrid, to £2,150 for Captur E-Tech hybrid, and £2,650 for Symbioz (7.9% APR representative, 6,000 miles, 48 months).

Arkana, Austral and Rafale E-Tech models gain an extra £1,000 on top of existing PCP offers during the event, boosting already generous finance contributions on the trio of hybrid models of up to £3,250 for Arkana (5.9% APR representative), up to £3,500 for Austral (5.9% APR representative) and up to £5,000 for Rafale (5.9% APR representative for HEV, 2.9% APR representative for PHEV).

There’s also the opportunity to save on the new flagship of the Renault range – the Rafale E-Tech PHEV with 300hp and all-wheel-drive. It is now available with a reduced interest rate of 2.9% APR representative (lowered from 5.9% APR representative) (5), and, during the event only, a deposit contribution of up to £5,000.

The 100% electric Megane and Scenic E-Tech ranges also receive an extra £1,000 on top of the existing PCP finance contributions of up to £3,000. This means customers could be driving a 25-reg Renault Scenic techno E-Tech 170hp comfort range for £299 per month1 via a 2.9% APR representative deal over 48 months with a £5,369 customer deposit.

Megane E-Tech electric buyers can choose an exclusive 0% APR representative PCP finance offer over four years with no minimum deposit required. This makes a 25-plate Megane E-Tech electric evolution comfort range available for £279 per month2 with a total Renault deposit of £2,500 and customer deposit of £5,632, or £388 per month3 with a customer deposit of £388.

To qualify for the additional deposit contribution, orders must be placed between 14th February and 3rd March, with vehicles registered by 31st March.

Customers ordering a Scenic E-Tech 100% electric or Megane E-tech 100% electric before December 16th 2024 are eligible to receive a credit equivalent to one year of driving*

Customers can also save hundreds of pounds a year* on their home charging compared to a standard home tariff, thanks to the new partnership with Octopus Energy**

The Intelligent Octopus Go tariff, combined with the Mobilize Smart Charge app, uses electricity from 100% renewable sources, enabling drivers to save on their home-charging costs as well as lower their carbon footprint

Mobilize Smart Charge app optimises charging to take place at the greenest and cheapest times, according to customer preferences

Renault UK and Mobilize have partnered with Octopus Energy to offer drivers of its E-Tech 100% electric vehicles one year’s free driving*, plus access to the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff which could save customers hundreds of pounds a year* over a standard variable tariff**.

Retail customers ordering the Scenic E-Tech 100% electric or Megane E-Tech 100% electric before December 16th 2024 that sign-up for the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff will receive a one-off credit on their energy account. Equivalent to the cost of charging at the off-peak rate over 10,000 miles of driving, the credit is calculated using the vehicle’s typical efficiency and WLTP figures**.

The Mobilize Smart Charge app allows Renault electric vehicle owners to optimise the cost of charging their car at home while reducing their carbon footprint thanks to intelligent charging scheduling.

Mobilize Smart Charge determines the optimal charging schedule by considering grid capacity, the availability of renewable energy sources, electricity prices, and the user’s charging preferences (such as desired charge level and departure time). This flexibility is highly valued by energy market players. Consequently, users can save money on their electricity bills, demonstrating the financial benefits of being adaptable.

The Intelligent Octopus tariff uses electricity from 100% renewable sources*** and charges at a super cheap rate of 7 pence per kWh when smart charging your EV throughout the day or night. The home also benefits from this off-peak, guaranteeing six hours every night from 11.30pm to 5.30am. As a result, a customer charging a Renault Megane E-Tech 100% electric could save 70% a year* compared to a standard variable tariff.

Octopus Energy is the UK’s largest electricity supplier and works directly with vehicle manufacturers to deliver a smooth charging experience. The company powers over seven million UK homes and more than 60,000 businesses with 100% green electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind.

Octopus’ innovative smart tariffs are enabled by its proprietary tech platform, Kraken, which manages 38 gigawatts in utility scale and domestic assets. Based on advanced data and machine learning capabilities, Kraken is optimising the charging of hundreds of thousands of EV batteries to help balance the grid, while providing cheap, green energy for customers.

Rosa Aguirre, Chief Operating Officer at Mobilize UK, said: “Our collaboration with Octopus Energy is a fantastic demonstration of two innovative brands coming together to advance smart charging technology. It is our ambition to help customers enjoy the very best electric vehicle experience, and the availability of the specifically designed tariff ensures that we provide an all-encompassing offering that merges award-winning electric vehicles with highly optimised charging solutions.”

Alex Schoch, Global Clean Tech Director at Octopus Energy, comments: “As more EVs hit the road, we want to give owners the chance to use the greenest energy when it’s at its cheapest. By working with Renault, even more drivers can access the most popular EV tariff in the UK and start becoming an active part of the cheap, green energy revolution.”

The introduction of the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff complements the other initiatives from Mobilize that are designed to support Renault customers with their EV ownership. These include both home charging and Charge Pass offers, ensuring customers enjoy an optimised, full electric vehicle ownership that is convenient, efficient and cost-effective, whether at home or on the road.

The Renault Emblème demo car reflects a company’s vision of a car meeting the challenge of low-carbon mobility

Addressing a major engineering and innovation challenge, this concept shows how vehicle production can enable a company such as Renault Group to achieve net zero carbon1 by 2040 in Europe and by 2050 worldwide

Renault Emblème was developed to maximise decarbonisation throughout its life cycle. It is a family car designed to slash CO2 eq. emissions from cradle to grave by 90%, compared with an equivalent vehicle today

This shooting brake of elegant, flowing lines symbolises a design intended to optimise aerodynamics and maximise efficiency

Renault Emblème is driven by an all-electric powertrain powered by a dual power energy, designed to reduce carbon emissions without compromising on versatility. It comprises a 40 kWh battery for everyday use with a hydrogen fuel cell for longer journeys

Emblème is 4.80 metres long, reaffirming Renault’s ambition to continue innovating in the C segment and higher

Emblème will be displayed on the Renault stand at the 2024 Paris Motor Show. In the near future, Ampere will be unveiling this concept in full, showing the technological advances making this level of decarbonisation possible

A Renaulutionary approach to decarbonisation
Decarbonising mobility is a key objective in the fight against climate change. For an automotive company such as Renault Group, it involves addressing a number of challenges relating to industry, energy, technology, supply, speed, and so on. To achieve net zero carbon by 2040 in Europe and 2050 worldwide, in line with its targets, the company needs to revolutionise the way it designs and builds its vehicles.

This approach is demonstrated by Renault Emblème displayed by the brand on its stand at the Paris Motor Show from 14 to 20 October. This vision of a family vehicle is a laboratory showcasing the innovations developed by Renault, Ampere and their partners to meet these requirements.

The main challenge of this landmark project lies in the extent to which decarbonisation has been maximised across the entire life cycle of the vehicle, from cradle to grave. Following on from the Scenic Vision H2-Tech concept in 2022, Renault Emblème takes the approach one step further, slashing greenhouse gas (CO2 eq.) emissions by 90%, compared with an equivalent vehicle built today; to produce just 5 tonnes of CO2 eq. from cradle to grave (see methodology section at the end of the press release).

To achieve this, the project explored a multitude of intelligent, credible and viable combinations: recycled materials with a low carbon footprint, natural materials, production processes relying entirely on renewable energy, general implementation of re-used parts and circularity, etc. The same was true of the technical choices, including the powertrain.

Efficiency at the heart of Renault’s new design language
Renault Emblème symbolises a new holistic approach to vehicle design. Its exterior design blends sportiness, elegance and emotion through sensual curves and graphic, technical character lines, creating an ultra-desirable object. The design is also the result of meticulous optimisation of aerodynamics, designed for efficiency through a more sustainable approach without compromising on aesthetics.

On Renault Emblème, for example, the exterior rearview mirror is replaced by two cameras integrated into the wheel arches, with windscreen wipers concealed under the bonnet and e-latch handles recessed into the bodywork. Two fins on the bonnet and two air vents on the bumper channel the airflow towards the windscreen and behind the wheels, respectively. The wheels are full disc, in order to conduct the air flow along the body. The F1-inspired flat-bottom design is enhanced by an active diffuser, which tilts downwards and to the rear to balance the airflow and minimise aerodynamic drag.

The design was fine-tuned using digital twin technology and state-of-the-art digital simulation equipment provided by the BWT Alpine F1 Team, as part of a fruitful collaboration between Renault and Ampère. By pooling their expertise, they were able to optimise passive and active aerodynamics for efficient air penetration. Renault Emblème has a very good Cx of 0.25.

The elegance of a family shooting brake making no compromises on efficiency
Renault Emblème ‘s strong curves and shooting brake style are showcased by the dichroic effect of the green bodywork, making the colour look different depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The vehicle is an elegant combination of an estate, with a wide wheelbase of 2.90 metres, and a coupé with a moderate height of 1.52 metres and flowing roofline.

The vehicle is 4.80 metres long, making it ideal for comfortable family travel, with passengers and luggage. It also symbolises Renault’s reaffirmed ambition to continue innovating in the C segment and higher, in line with its value-based strategy. Exploring new paths in design inspired by the iconic Renault logo, the light signature is intended to be both high-tech and easily identifiable.

A vehicle’s weight, which is partially linked to its size, impacts its CO2 eq. emissions at several levels: when materials are extracted, during production and transport, during use (impact on energy consumption) and when the vehicle is recycled. As part of their eco-design approach, the designers and engineers hunted down every superfluous kilogram, with the aim of reaching a weight of 1,750 kg, including batteries. Renault Emblème therefore weighs less than most hybrid SUVs or electric vehicles of similar size.

A powertrain combining versatility and low carbon performance
Renault Emblème has a dual power energy electric powertrain powered in two ways: by a “conventional” rechargeable battery, sufficient for everyday use, and by a hydrogen fuel cell for longer journeys. Based on the AmpR Medium platform, the rear-wheel drive architecture hosts the various powertrain components (electric motor, battery, fuel cell and hydrogen tank) while maintaining a low centre of gravity and ideal weight distribution to promote performance and efficiency.

Emblème ‘s 160 kW wound-rotor electric motor uses no rare earths. It is powered by a small NMC battery (40 kWh), which is lighter, cheaper, less bulky and more environmentally friendly than that of a long-range family electric vehicle. It has a range of several hundred kilometres, more than enough for everyday journeys. The 30 kW PEMFC fuel cell runs on low-carbon hydrogen via a 2.8 kg tank, providing the power required for long journeys, with maximum efficiency of around 60%.

This configuration maximises the versatility of this type of vehicle, which is able to cover a distance of up to 1,000 km as rapidly as an ICE vehicle: without charging but with just two stops for hydrogen refuelling – less than five minutes each time – for a range of 350 km. On a typical journey between Paris and Marseille, 75% of the electricity consumed by the vehicle is produced by the fuel cell, with no emissions other than water.

An innovative working method
In view of the ambitious decarbonisation goals, the Emblème demo car required new working methods. No fewer than 20 partners, all experts in their own fields, worked on the project with Renault and Ampere. Each one contributed their own technology or expertise to slash CO2 eq. emissions by 90% over the vehicle’s entire life cycle.

This collective horizontal approach encourages innovation without barriers between the Group, its brands, entities, partners and suppliers. For this project, this approach made it possible to harness exceptional technological diversity and complexity to achieve high decarbonisation targets. The Emblème demo car shows once again that Renault Group is at the forefront of innovation, driving progress in mobility and the automotive industry in general, making its entire ecosystem part of the process.

Ampere will unveil this car in full at the end of October.

A methodology based on vehicle lifecycle analysis
Life cycle analysis (LCA) is a scientific method to quantify a vehicle’s environmental impacts from cradle to grave. It factors in material extraction and component production, as well as vehicle assembly, transport, use, maintenance and recycling. It is the global, standardised multi-criterion tool used by Renault Group. One of its main uses is to calculate the global warming potential associated with greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalent (CO2 eq.) per vehicle sold. Renault Group calculates the actual consumption of its vehicles over 200,000 km. Renault Group and Ampere also support the proposal made by the French automotive industry to measure the impact of the entire vehicle life cycle.

For a Megane E-Tech electric, total emissions based on its life cycle analysis amount to 24 tonnes of CO2 eq. That is practically half that of an equivalent model running on fossil fuels (49 tonnes of CO2 eq. in the case of a Captur with a petrol engine). All-electric mobility, in other words, is more virtuous in terms of CO2 eq. emissions. The goal for the Emblème project is 5 tonnes of CO2 eq. from cradle to grave, i.e. a reduction of about 90%!

Symbioz embodies the best of Renault’s latest C-segment vehicles in terms of modular design, connectivity and efficiency. It has all the qualities necessary to appeal to both families and businesses looking for a level of electrification, while keeping a firm hold on total ownership costs.

The latest Renault model shares its DNA with a long line of innovative family-friendly cars that are voiture à vivre (cars for living) and reflect our changing needs. From the Renault 16, first launched in 1965 with its bench seat that included a ‘holiday travel’ position, to the Renault Scénic that introduced the world to the compact MPV in the 1990s.

Positioned between Captur and Austral, Symbioz expands the Renault offering at the entry level of the C-segment. Only 4.41m long, this new model rounds out the full-hybrid E-Tech family of Arkana (4.57m) and Austral (4.51m), alongside the E-Tech electric models, with Megane and Scenic electric.

Symbioz benefits from the very best in Renault technology. It features the OpenR Link multimedia system with Google built-in, and the Solarbay tinted glass roof. The top of the range iconic esprit Alpine version boasts 24 new-generation driving aids that elevate safety and driving comfort to the highest levels.

Versatile as well as stylish, Symbioz boasts boot space of up 624 litres and a rear seat that slides by 16 cm, creating a flat floor when fully folded and enabling the interior to be easily adapted to customers’ requirements.

Weighing under 1,500 kg, Symbioz is also relatively light, which helps to enhance efficiency. Using the E-Tech full hybrid 145 powertrain it produces only 105g/km CO2.

Part of an ambitious product placement programme by Renault over the last two years targeting cinema, video-on-demand and television

Renault Scenic Vision concept previewed the design of the forthcoming new Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric that will launch next year

The Renault Scenic Vision – the striking concept car that previewed the design of the bold all new Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric due to launch in 2024 – and the Megane E-Tech 100% electric have both taken up starring roles in the hit new Netflix series ‘Bodies’.

All eight episodes of Bodies – a British limited series based on a graphic novel written by Si Spencer – have been available to stream on Netflix since 19 October, already securing the show a spot on the “Top 10 in Series in 72 countries on Netflix” list. The series charts four detectives in different time periods who are trying to solve a case related to each other.

Grounded in the present with the Megane E-Tech 100% electric and thrust into the future with the Scenic Vision electric/hydrogen hybrid, Renault accompanies the detectives’ investigations in the Whitechapel district of East London.

Thankfully, customers won’t need to wait until 2053 to get behind the wheel of the all new Scenic E-Tech 100% electric. Following its unveiling at the Munich Motor Show, this modern reinterpretation of family mobility will go on sale in the first half of 2024 with a focus on sustainability and a 379-mile range from its 100% electric powertrain.

It builds on the success of the award-winning Megane E-Tech 100% electric with its bold design, innovative interior, and highly connected digital experience.

Stéphane Barbat, Renault Partnerships Marketing Director, said: “For the past two years, Renault has been pursuing an ambitious product placement programme showcasing the brand’s new range. Our vehicles have appeared in several Netflix productions, such as Lost Bullet and Lupin.”
